About Nubra Valley Information


Nubra Valley, is nestled towards the north east of Ladakh. The tri-armed valley is perched 3048 meters above the sea level and is termed as heaven on earth. It is necessary for a tourist to acquire an Inner line permit for entering. The Shyok River meets the Nubra River or Siachen River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. Both the rivers are the main water resources for the eastern and the western sides of the Saser sub-range of the Karakoram ranges. Tourists love to enjoy riding on the back of the Bactrian Camels while admiring the view of snow-covered mountain peaks.

Location
Nestled in the northern most part of Jammu and Kashmir, the Nubra is around 150 km north from Leh. The altitude of the valley is just a little less than that of the Leh. It falls somewhere between 10,000 ft that is 3,231 m at Hundar and 10,600 ft that is 3231 m at Panamik.

Khardung Pass
Khardung Pass (as ‘La’ implies ‘pass’ in Tibetan Language) is the gateway to the remote Nubra and Shyok valleys. The mountain pass holds a special significance as it is the way to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier. It offers astonishing views of the twisting roads up the mountain and the awesome valley.
Khardung La lies at a distance of 39 km from the Leh. The breathtaking views en route make the journey worth experiencing at least once. Although, this pass is a gateway to Nubra Valley, people grab an opportunity to reach and spend quality time here only. Thus, with the passage of time, traffic is also increasing at this vehicle-accessible-road.

Hunder

Located 150 kilometers North of Leh, Hunder, sitting at an average altitude of 10, 000 feet, is a small village where the Shyok River meets Nubra River. Hunder lies on the ancient silk route, once an important international trade route. Today it is one of the most strategic points located close as it is to the Siachen Glacier, the world highest battle ground between India and Pakistan.

Hunder is most popular for the camel rides in the high altitude cold desert. The camel safaris are done on Bactrian Double-humped Camels which are reminder the bygone era of Silk Route trade. The vast stretch of sand dunes between Hunder Village and Diskit is where you will see the Bactrian Camels grazing in the sea-buckthorn forests. It is also where most of the safari rides are offered.

Diskit Village

Located on the banks of the Shok River, Diskit Village is an administrative center of the Nubra Valley of Ladakh. The scenic town comprises of various government offices. Perched at a height of 10,310 feet above sea level, the hamlet offers stunning views of the Nubra Valley. The destination witnesses tourists both in winters as well as summers for a number of reasons. But, the village is particularly famous for an iconic monastery.

Thick thorny shrubs cover the valley and are used by the locals as a source of fuel as well as for fencing. The villages that are situated around the valley are huge, flourishing and have thick plantations of poplar and willow.
